White Eagle, Red Star by Norman Davies6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Over the years, Prof. Davies received many honors and distinctions. His books have been translated into over thirty languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Ukrainian, Spanish, German, Italian, and French. As a successful historian writing in English, however, he rapidly gained a worldwide readership and devoted himself to informing the world about Poland. His early books – White Eagle, Red Star: the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-20, (1972), God's Playground: a history of Poland (1981), and Heart of Europe: the past in Poland's present (1984) – were banned by the censorship of the Soviet Block and long unavailable to Polish readers. Fascinated by what he learned and by what the authorities did not want him to learn, he made the study of Polish history the starting point of his academic career. Norman Davies first visited Poland in March 1962, when he was still a student in his final year at Oxford. ![]()

Mrs de winter by susan hill6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Within this remit, close reading of selected dance, culinary practices and visual materials will illustrate the trajectory of my research. ![]() Here I also seek to demonstrate a broad overview of the intervention my research eff ects within scholarship on the Gujarati diaspora, their narratives of belonging and, as Parminder Bhachu describes, discourses on the ‘twice migrant’. Given the trauma of departing from multiple homelands and relocating in a sometimes racist host nation, this article explicates how both individuated and collective identity are formed and reformed. My research, grounded in literary studies, excavates the cultural impact of these painful deracinations, which were forced in Uganda, and less coerced in Kenya. Many members of this community, who were indeed also Gujaratis, migrated to Britain. August 2012 saw the fortieth anniversary of the South Asian population’s expulsion from Uganda, by Idi Amin. ![]()

![]() But her father is ailing, and it feels to her as if something is missing. ![]() She’s happy with her apartment, her romantic status, her independence, and she adores her lifelong best friend. She likes her job, even if it isn’t exactly the one she expected. On the eve of her 40th birthday, Alice’s life isn’t terrible. This promises to be a moving story about family and second chances. Her latest novel, This Time Tomorrow, tackles a new avenue for her-the time travel genre. I really enjoy Emma Straub’s novels! She typically presents engaging character studies while also providing plenty of heart and wit. Remember to check back to the site for my reviews and book club questions for each of these selections. Here’s the 10 books listed in order of pub dates. There’s everything from lighter, summery romance type novels to in-depth literary fiction. I try to include different genres and also both debut and returning authors. You know I like my list posts on Book Club Chat but I have to say that my summer list is one of my favorites! I spend a lot of time checking out books releasing during the summer months to consider which ones sound promising for book clubs. And of course, I spend plenty of time at home reading too. We used to go on family road trips and I always brought books with me-even when we went to check out various MLB games back in my mom’s home state of Ohio.Īs an adult, I carried on the tradition and like to bring books (or my Kindle) with me on trips. ![]() I love summer reading! While growing up, I tried to read as many books as possible during summer break. ![]()

The iron fey series books in order6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() I found them to be a little flat and not very layered. ![]() ![]() The characters are nice, but not much more than that. The storyline is unpredictable, thrilling and suspenseful. I liked how Julie Kagawa mixed these two together to create a wholly unique world for the characters to be a part of. The story is a modern and ancient mix with the original Summer and Winter fey being the ancient part of Nevernever, born out of fables and human dreams while the Iron fey are the more modern part of Nevernever being born out of the human technological dreams. The plot of the book is very unique and I know I always say that but I promise you I'm not just saying this. We also have side characters such as the kings and queens of Nevernever, Grimalkin and certain Iron fey the characters are friends with. The series focuses on Meghan, Ash, Puck, Ethan, Kierran and Kenzie as some of the main characters. I read the series a while back and have re-read it recently because I really loved it the first time around I had read it. The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa is a unique and well written series. ![]()

She struggles to cope with the loss of her new friends, and is stunned when over a decade later, though no bodies have ever been found, the camp is reopening– and Emma is invited back. I’m glad I didn’t.Ībout the book: Fifteen years ago, Emma’s summer camp experience came to a crashing halt when the other three girls from her cabin vanished without a trace. The fact that it takes place at a summer camp made me a little wary (I felt like I had heard that story before), but I still couldn’t pass it up.
